When planning travel to Cusco Weather or Peru in general, you have to consider the regions (Costa, Sierra, Amazon), weather and seasons so you can make informed decisions about where to go and what to pack. In general majority of people instinctively assume that the weather throughout Cusco is the same, but that’s not really true. Cusco Departmento (State) is a large region compose of 13 provinces and its weather can vary greatly from one destination to another, from cold dry areas to humid hot Amazon weather.
The weather in Cusco Departamento is determined not only by region location but also by altitude (Cusco City’s altitude 11,150 ft (3,400 m) a.s.l.).
Cusco has jungle forests (Peruvian Amazon), dry areas, fertile valleys and Andean snow-capped mountains. Since Cusco’s terrain is extremely varied, so is the weather. On the Ceja de Selva (Amazon edge) Machu Picchu the climate is generally balmy year-round, but some months are rainy and others dry, and Cusco City can have days that are quite chilly, and nights that are downright cold (below zero).
Seasons in Cusco
In Cusco there are two main seasons (Cold dry winter & Warm wet summer). Although there is some variation in temperature over the year, the most obvious difference is between rainy (November – April) and dry seasons (May – October). The rainy season through most of Cusco falls roughly from November through March or April. During the rest of the year there is little or no rain. Don’t be too pessimistic when planing to visit during rainy season, because you’ll be surprise to see lush, green landscape, as opposed to the dry season’s arid, brown landscape – and it often rains anytime for a short period that can last 30 to 45 minutes.
Rain and other natural disasters can ruin your vacation. Before heading to Cusco during rain season (especially January and February), check the weather forecasts and read up about precautions you can take in our trending page: Rain Season Travel in Cusco
